- Thank you for coming at such short notice, Miss Adams.
<br />- Oh, you’re welcome, Sir. But what is this all about? Why did you want to see me?
<br />-Well, we’d like to ask you a few questions about what you did on Monday afternoon.
<br />- Oh, I see. You mean Monday 4th May, is that right?
<br />- Quite right, Miss Adams. So, where were you on Monday afternoon?
<br />- Well, I was at work of course.
<br />- Did you leave the office where you work by any chance?
<br />- Hm, yes, I did. You see, a friend of mine came by and… we went out for some coffee.
<br />- What time did you leave your office, Miss Adams?
<br />- Well, let me see….  Jack, I mean my friend, came by at about half past three and….
<br />- So, you left your office at half past three…
<br />- Hm, I’m afraid I can’t be sure. You see, Jack looked pretty moody, well, a bit worried and I was worried, too. You see, his mother is in hospital and I thought something had happened to her, so…
<br />- And?
<br />- Well, I asked him what was wrong but Jack didn’t feel like talking, I’m afraid. He said he was tired, but I didn’t believe him. Anyway, he suggested we go out for a cup of coffee. So we went out.
<br />- And where did you go?
<br />- We went to a café just opposite my office. It’s called “The Brown Corner”. It’s Jack’s favourite café and I really like it myself.
<br />- And then? How long did you stay there?
<br />- Not long, I’m afraid. Jack was silent; he was just staring at the walls, and… Then he did something really strange.
<br />- What?
<br />
- Well, he stood up and said he had to leave. He disappeared before I even talked to him. Pretty strange, really. You see, Jack is usually talkative and nice. He tells jokes and we have a good laugh but last Monday he was a different person altogether.
<br />- What time did Jack leave, Miss Adams?
<br />- Quarter to four, actually.  He just rushed out of the café without saying a word. …. Anyway, what’s wrong? How come you ask me such questions? Is Jack all right? Is he sick or hurt by any chance?
<br />- Don’t worry, Miss Adams. Your friend is OK. It’s just Police routine…
<br />- I find it hard to believe it, I’m afraid.
